Former Grande Prairie resident Gary Thiel had the highest bid for the Stompede All-Pro tarp auction last night at $4000.
“Excellent sale. New sponsor for me, came on board last year, they’re very supportive. I’ve been racing in Grande Prairie since 1993. I’ve been in the top three several times, haven’t been able to win this show, but it’s a great place to come and race.”
Jack Stott had the highest bid for Teepee Creek at $2600.
Some drivers did not draw any bids, but Thiel is confident they will find sponsors before wagon season starts.
“It’s a little bit soft, but it’s expected with the economy the way it is. I’m sure the drivers will pick up a sponsor, usually at the end of the sale, guys will step up to the plate and sponsor some wagons.”
Driver Tracy Stott thinks the sale turned out well overall.
“It was a good sale, I think, different venue. The way of the (economic) times, that’s sort of the way it is, but I think overall it was a good sale.”
Stompede, the 40th edition, runs May 31 to June 4. The Teepee Creek Stampede is set for July 13 to 16.
