The public will not be allowed to use the CKC West Synthetic Turf Field until further notice, however it is not expected to be too long.
The field is temporarily closed due to snow melting, exposing garbage and other debris and putting it at risk of damage.
“We’re not able to groom the field yet, because it’s not completely clear and it hasn’t thawed to the point where it’s completely drained. What we’ve done is we’ve taken the field out of play, probably until later this weekend,” said Kylee Haining, Manager of Recreation and Sport for the City of Grande Prairie.
When the field does re-open it can be rented from the city for events, games and practices.
“We have a variety of rates based on who you are. There’s a half pitch rate for practices and then a full pitch rate for games. That’s been in place for probably three years now. In between those activities though, if there’s just spontaneous (activity), you know a couple kids want to kick a ball around, we’ve never stopped them from doing that,” Haining said.
“It’s a fabulous facility. We’re able to use it 1,000 hours per year, which is four times which you can normally put on a grass field. We just want to preserve the life of it as long as possible for the community.”
They will post an update via their Twitter or Facebook pages when it does re-open.
