The City of Grande Prairie has added $200,000 into the 2017 budget for “Large Scale Tourism Events”.
The policy is aimed at driving tourism and economic developments to the region.
Mayor Bill Given says applicants would have to meet certain criteria in order to be approved for any city grants.
“For example, a certain number of attendees would have to come from outside of a 45-kilometre radius from Grande Prairie…meaning they would have to travel to Grande Prairie and would have to be spending money at restaurants and hotels, in order for it to really have an economic benefit or impact.”
Given says the event would also have to be a ticketed multi-day event with an attendance of more than $200,000 people per day.
Council has asked city administration to give recommendations on how to allocate the money to various events.
