Many residents in Grande Prairie, Clairmont and Sexsmith may have noticed a strong smell coming out of their taps.
Aquatera’s Stacey Kruger says it is normal for this time of year.
“As great as it is to have a natural water source like we do here, the Wapiti River, the challenge is that with the warmer spring temperatures, we tend to get a lot of snow melting into the river which brings other natural organics into it causing the smell.”
She says the water is safe to drink and recommends people “run your tap a little longer before filling your cup, we also recommend putting it into a pitcher and into the fridge before drinking it or people could always put lemon or slices of fruit in there to help with the smell as well.”
She says it could take till May to clear up, depending how fast the snow melts and runs off into the river.
