The Alberta Small Brewers Development Program continues to help small brewers across the province, including here in Grande Prairie.
Dalen Landis with the Grain Bin Brewing Company says the $25 million set aside in budget 2017 is quite welcome.
“It is enormous. And it also helps the craft (beer) market in Alberta compete,” Landis said. “All breweries are charged the same amount of tax from the provincial government. What the Alberta Small Brewers Development grant does is, it’s based on volume, so the lower volume producers are given a lot of that tax back.”
Brewers who produce 300,000 hectolitres or less annually qualify for the grant and rebate program. Landis says they only produce about 10,000 hectolitres each year at Grain Bin Brewing.
“It levels the playing field,” he said.
To date, 50 small brewers in Alberta have taken advantage of the program and that number is expected the grow.
The Alberta Government also put $16 million into the program in the previous budget.
