Alberta’s NDP government has announced plans to speed up the cleanup of abandoned oil and gas wells.
$235-million will be loaned to the Orphan Well Association, with the interest covered by $30-million from the federal government announced in the last budget.
Energy Minister Marg McCuaig-Boyd says it’s up to the Orphan Well Association to decide which wells will be tackled first.
“They will be making a plan over the next, I don’t know, weeks or months to address this additional amount of wells. There’s over two-thousand wells that we can address. It’s a lot of work for people over the next three years so they’re going to come up with a three-year plan but they do base it on risk and safety and we know there’s lots around the province so odds are there will be some up our way.”
The project will create around 1,650 new jobs.
