The 6th annual Chair-Leaders Enabling Access Event goes June 6 in Grande Prairie, with able bodied people being given an opportunity to use a wheelchair for a day.
“The chairs themselves are being provided by Better Life Home Medical,” said Mieke de Groot, Regional Program Coordinator for Spinal Cord Injury Alberta.
She says she’s hoping to have final numbers on wheelchairs by May 31. If you are interested, you are asked to contact de Groot directly at 780-831-1091 or 780-532-3055. She can also be contacted via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“I will organize the wheelchairs as well as a pickup point and the drop-off point for people, so they can transfer their chairs into their car in order to get to their meetings and appointments of the day.”
“The purpose of this is to help people understand what kind of renovations need to be done in their public buildings, as well as to encourage management to look at people who have disabilities as employable,” explained de Groot. “Those who sign on after today are encouraged to take the wheelchair to work or to play, whatever their interests are.”
There will also be stuff happening at Bowling Stones.
“The bowling at the end of the day is playing into our kick-off event for our summer bowling team… we are looking for additional people interested in adapted bowling to join a league in the fall.”
It goes between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. on June 6 and is free of charge.
Volunteers are also being welcomed.
