HIV North will begin a needs assessment for supervised consumption services soon.
The organization’s Interim Executive Director, Melissa Byers says they have hired some extra help and will be conducting surveys mid-June.
“If the need is shown and we meet all the exemption criteria we can move forward with the federal exemption, they are the ultimate ones who get to decide. And then we come back to the city and we look at zoning, we look at bylaws and then we look at setting up a site.”
The criteria includes getting community feedback as well as having AHS representation.
She hopes the 200 interviews will be finished by the end of August.
“And we are going to assess HIV rates, how people use drugs, what kids of drugs they’re using, what they are doing worth their equipment, where they are using drugs, if they would use a supervised consumption site, where they would use a supervised consumption site.”
