After a big turnout in the first year, the 2nd Annual Healing Hearts Homeless Memorial is set for today.
“It was bigger than we expected,” said Natascha Okimew, Cultural Navigator at the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre. “The Grande Prairie Fire Department had actually come down with their guys, and brought their trucks down. A lot of our council members from the city were there as well representing. Just the amount of community people that came down, we figured there was around 100-plus people that attended last year.”
It’s scheduled from 12-2 p.m. in Muskoseepi Park near the train trestle, right across from the Second Street Theatre parking lot.
“People that live in the community get to know each other very well, and then someone passes on and there’s nothing done for them to honour them once they’ve left this earth. We just decided to have this celebration, or memorial, to remember them,” explained Lisa Simmons, member of the Community Homelessness Action Team and Healing Hearts Committee.
“We see it all around us, and sometimes they get neglected or they don’t get remembered. That’s just kind what this is all about,” Simmons added.
A community BBQ will follow the memorial.
A commemorative bench will also be unveiled.
