After a lengthy discussion, a city committee has decided against any regulations about where liquor stores are located in Grande Prairie.
Councillor Dwight Logan says he prefers to let the market decide where stores are located.
“We have to ensure that we are fair to everybody, while at the same time being able to have protections in place for people…. I’m thinking primarily parents…. who would like to ensure that access to alcohol in stores is not there.”
Logan thinks restrictions like setbacks would give some operators an unfair advantage.
He adds he does not think the discussion is over.
“I think this is going to carry on because there are people that have hot emotions about alcohol. And they should because alcohol is not just something that you enjoy, but it is also an engine of danger for people that get involved in accidents and so on, and have abused alcohol.”
One motion brought forward to send a change in zoning requirements to council was defeated.
