Horse Lake is in the middle of a project that will see solar power panels added to it’s arena.
Empower Energy is doing the work.
President Ross Thiessen says the panels, being placed on the arena’s roof, will be connected to the power grid.
“When the sun is shining during the day and we are actually producing more energy than what the building uses, the energy will flow backwards into the grid and we get a credit at the same rate of what the customer pays for their energy.”
Thiessen says there are a number of reasons Horse Lake decided to do this…
“It definitely is a money saver. Over the long term it saves a considerable amount of money. Another big thing is the environmental impact. And just by empowering their community to be self sustaining.”
Community members are also helping with the construction.
The first phase is supposed to be done within a couple weeks.
It is not known when the second phase will start.
