This weekend the Northern Twistmasters Arm Wrestling Club is in Halifax to compete in the 2017 Canadian National Arm Wrestling Championship.
Reigning women’s super heavyweight National Champion Maria Peterson will be one of the members travelling to the competition.
Peterson says defending her titles adds some more pressure, since it is hard to do it twice.
“I’ve been going to practices once a week at the Crosslink Centre, they hold their practice Thursday nights at seven o’clock to nine o’clock and I go there and pull with the guys and then I just lift weights and work hard on my farm and hope for the best,” said Peterson.
Head Coach Doug Curtiss, who is also one of the club’s competitors, says team has success because of the environment they train in.
“We’re not just a bunch of guys meeting up and beating up on each other at the club, you know, arm wrestling to see who can win,” said Curtiss. “It’s all of us showing each other what we do and where our weaknesses are so that people can exploit that and we can learn how to defend against that and it’s a real great team environment.”
The competition is taking place today and tomorrow.
