Other than a few flowers, just weeds and grass are growing in Grande Prairie’s Community Garden this summer.
The city’s Kase DeVries says that is because the garden will be moving from it’s current location on 98 Street just north of 100 Avenue to a spot near the new concourse by the Montrose Cultural Centre.
“And so, because that new facility wasn’t quite ready this spring, the decision was made not to plant in the old garden, because we weren’t sure the timing and when that transition (would happen) and when we would be moving over.”
DeVries says they had hoped to have a garden in place this year in the new location.
“But, when it came to spring, obviously the construction on the South Montrose site was a little bit delayed and so they had some catch-up to do and they wouldn’t have been ready for a garden yet.”
He says the decision was a joint one between the city and the Grande Prairie Garden Club, which manages the community garden on behalf of the city.
“The plan is to start planning for (the) 2018 garden on the new site and then that planning would start to take place this fall.”
