Sunday will be a historic day in Sexsmith.
Lord Stanley’s mug will be paraded through downtown Sexsmith with Cup champion, and former member of the Grande Prairie Storm, Carter Rowney.
“The fire department is going to lead the way, the local Town of Sexsmith Fire Department. Sexsmith Minor Hockey is involved with people that have played hockey in Sexsmith over the last year, as well as the GPAC Storm and Storm Alumni. Some dignitaries have been invited… and then the Rowney family will be on a truck and trailer at the very end of the parade,” explained Clinton Froehlick, Sexsmith Arena Manager.
Froehlick says there’s a noticeable buzz in the town of over 2,600, which lies about 20 kilometres north of Grande Prairie.
“Honestly, that’s what you hear about downtown. That’s the talk of the town right now. And it’s good, it’s exciting.”
The parade will start and end at the arena in Sexsmith. It begins at 4:30 p.m. and there will be an opportunity to snap photos with Rowney and/or the Stanley Cup afterwards.
“Be patient when you’re waiting for pictures. The pictures inside the arena are by donation only. There will be a bin or a box, or something setup. Feel free to drop money in the donation bin, all the proceeds are going to go to the Ag Society. But just be patient, we’re going to get as many people through as we possibly can,” Froehlick said.
Organizers are anticipating a large turnout. It is advised you arrive early for the best spots to watch the parade.
