Members of both the Wildrose Party and the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta have voted overwhelmingly to approve a proposal to join forces.
95.4 percent of Wildrose Party members that casted a vote chose to create the new party, while 95 percent of PC party members that voted did likewise.
The new party will be known as the United Conservative party. A founding convention will be planned, with a race to select the party’s first ever leader expected to begin shortly.
Both current PC party leader Jason Kenney and Wildrose leader Brian Jean have announced their plans to seek the leadership of the newly formed party, as has Calgary lawyer Doug Schweitzer.
That vote is expected to take place in October.
