We’re just over a month away from Junior A hockey returning to the Peace Region.
The Grande Prairie Storm kick-off their exhibition schedule the final week of August when they welcome the Prince George Spruce Kings to Revolution Place.
Storm Business Manager Dennis Rix is hoping the recent NHL success of former player Carter Rowney, coupled with the clubs return to the playoffs, leads to more of a buzz this season.
“It shows the fans what can happen from the Storm players here that we have in town. A local boy came through the system, just like all the guys we have playing [right now]. He definitely credits a lot of his success to the Storm, and I think we’re worthwhile for a watch,” said Rix.
The team is also hosting an alumni weekend and golf tournament August 18-19.
“We did one last year and we’re doing it again. Carter Rowney’s coming back for that. We have other guys; Tanner Fritz and Darren Kramer both play in the American League. As well as some older guys; Mark Malekoff, Trevor Mazurek, Jack Redlick. Some of those guys like that are coming back,” explained Rix. “We’re having a hockey game the Friday night at 7:30, August 18th. And then a golf tournament August 19th.”
The Storm will begin the regular season at home this year. They host the Fort McMurray Oil Barons September 16th.
