Road safety within construction zones is the focus of this month’s Select Traffic Enforcement Program in Grande Prairie.
“Our officers have been out enforcing this for awhile and yes we are getting a fair amount of people that are speeding through the construction zones. These workers are out there, they’re concentrating on their job, they’re concentrating on what they are doing, they may not be watching traffic as closely as they should,” says Ross Gear, Supervisor with Enforcement Services.
He says drivers caught speeding through a construction zone when workers are present are subject to fines that are double the normal amount.
Illegal parking is the focus of the August Bylaw Education Enforcement Program.
Gear says they find that a lot of drivers do not know the difference between ‘no parking’ and ‘no stopping’ zones.
“In a no-parking zone a motorist is allowed to stop in order for passengers to get in and out of a vehicle, however the vehicle cannot be abandoned. In a no-stopping zone a vehicle is not allowed to stop, at all.”
The fine for parking illegally is $68, with the exception being parking in a handicap spot without a proper placard. The fine for that is $250.
