WestJet says it is adding a fourth daily, round trip flight between Calgary and Grande Prairie.
WestJet Encore President Charles Duncan says this, plus some schedule changes, should allow travellers from here access to more connections to other destinations.
“Last winter, from Grande Prairie, we connected to eight cities, round trip and that’s eight cities with a connection of two-and-a-half hours or less. This coming winter, we’ll have 15 cities and some really exciting places like New York and beach destinations in Mexico that we flew to last year but, from Grande Prairie, would have required a hotel overnight.”
He thinks adding a flight shows the economy is picking up.
“In total, in the province, we have seen a billion dollars in less spending on travel in Alberta since the recession started. We’re beginning to see a rebound and travel is picking up from Grande Prairie and, really, across the province.”
Duncan says the economy has not yet completely recovered, though.
“It’s not back to the levels it was previously. It has bottomed-out. Things are rebounding. Our bookings this summer have been quite strong.”
The new flight will be in place as of October 30.
