The Emerson Trail Cemetery, located just south of Sexsmith, is now home to a columbarium.
Each niche cost $1,250 to purchase, with an additional cost of $220 to inscribe a name and date on the door. In total, there are 36 available.
County of Grande Prairie CAO Bill Rogan says there was a growing demand from residents for a columbarium.
“Recent surveys done across the country and elsewhere suggested that the columbarium is becoming much more common and much more of a request. So, we’re really reacting to a change in what’s happening in that particular field.”
“It’s in the design of a typical country elevator. The old style, not the high throughput, but rather the old style of country elevator, to reflect the farming community. In particular the Sexsmith area, well known for it’s grain storage capacity many years ago,” Rogan added.
