With more farm machinery being moved this time of year, ATCO Electric is reminding people not to gamble with power lines.
“If there is contact made with a power line, we’re just asking if it is safe to stay in the machine, just to stay put and to call our after hours number,” said Doug Baggett, Area Supervisor with ATCO. “We will send somebody just to make sure it’s safe to get off the machine. There is danger in exiting the machine if you don’t have to.”
There can only be one point of contact at any time – you can not touch the ground and the machine at the same time.
Last year in Alberta, there were 72 times where farm machinery made contact with power lines.
“If you’re moving machinery you can call us and we can come out and take a look and help pick the best route to move equipment around…map things out for you, measure the overhead clearance to the line.”
Baggett also wants to remind farmers, whether it’s grain bin or bale storage, stack or store it at least seven metres away from power lines.
The number to call ATCO for help moving machinery is 1-855-277-1670. For more information on power line safety, visit www.atcoelectric.com.
