Former Prime Minister Kim Campbell will be in Grande Prairie this October.
The first ever Evening of Empowerment will be hosted by Odyssey House at the Pomeroy Hotel October 21.
The event, which they hope will become an annual thing, will be a night of empowering women and the roles they play in politics, the world and our communities.
“It’s really important to showcase the roles that females have in terms of politics and what that looks like. We’re hoping that Kim is going to come and talk about some of those struggles, you know, some of those pieces that she experienced when she was in office,” said Ebony Rempel, Executive Director at the Odyssey House in Grande Prairie.
As Rempel also explains, the evening will not be about raising funds but about raising awareness of the importance women play in our lives.
“To bring an event like this to this city that otherwise, to my knowledge, hasn’t had somebody like this come and do this kind of work [helps]. And really align it with the work that Odyssey House is doing so we can get out to the community more, and really work at changing some of these stereotypes and looking at some of these roles that women are known for having, and shifting that perhaps.”
“I know she [Campbell] talks a little bit about having people in these particular positions to really try to shift the narrative away from assuming that all Prime Ministers must be male,” Rempel added.
Campbell was the first, and remains the only female, to have served as the Prime Minister of Canada.
Tickets cost $75 each and are available at www.evergreenpark.ca/online-tickets. That gets you a buffet dinner and champagne reception.
For an additional $50 fee, you can have a meet and greet with Campbell.
