Update: RCMP have determined the fire was started as the result of an arson attempt. They are now calling this an Arson Investigation.
City fire officials say a small fire Tuesday night at an apartment complex could have been a lot worse than it was, and stresses the importance of evacuating once you hear the fire alarm go off.
Crews were called to block four of the Courtyard apartments around 9:45 p.m. for a fire on the bottom floor of the north stairwell.
Residents were evacuated as smoke filled the stairwell, and were allowed back in about 45 minutes later after the blaze was put out and the building had been ventilated.
Two people were seen leaving the scene after turning on the fire alarm.
Officials believe the fire was intentionally set, and are investigating this instance along with another call to the same apartment complex on Monday night, when two people were seen leaving the scene after activating the fire alarm pull box.
Fire officials remind you that arson is a serious crime, and that it is illegal to activate a fire alarm without reasonable cause.
Damage from last night’s fire is pegged at around $1,000.
