Proponents of a fast-growing sport say they have an idea to re-purpose the old tennis courts at the Dave Barr Arena.
They want to see them turned into spaces for pickleball, described as a combination between table tennis and badminton.
One of the people behind the idea, Lindi Speager, says 60 people who live in this area play pickleball.
“We really are hoping to bring the whole region together. We have pickleball players all over, in Beaverlodge, in Bezanson and Sexsmith and we want to bring them all together, so that we have one unified group. We’re hoping to build some courts that will bring the people together.”
Another one of the people behind the idea, Doug Speager, says pickleball, and the social aspect that comes with it, are appealing to all ages.
“I think part of it is that people of all different ages and fitness levels (take part). A lot of people come out and they’re not really competitive and they’re not in great shape, but it gets them there, gets them working on it and they can go out and have fun and play. That’s probably easier than any other sport.”
A city committee has asked administration to look into this idea. There were room for six pickleball courts where there are currently two tennis courts.
