A group of municipal leaders met in Lloydminster recently to talk about the legalization of recreational marijuana.
Mayor Bill Given says it was the general consensus of the mid-sized city mayors that the province applies a phased in approach to introducing the drug.
“That would see a measured implementation of the retail sale of cannabis sale in the province. The intent behind that overarching approach is to ensure that we have an opportunity as Albertans to assess the change and adapt as needed.”
He says potential negative outcomes can be avoided if the drug is eased in to allow adjustment along the way.
“Municipalities will continue to have influence over recreational cannabis outlets through their land-use bylaws and business licensing bylaws. That is really clear. This was really an opportunity for the mayors to come together and have a position on those issues that are outside of the direct municipal control. We are really looking to influence the approach that the province takes.”
