There were tributes and some tears at city council Monday as councillors saluted their four colleagues who have decided not to again.
Helen Rice, Rory Tarant, Lorne Radbourne and Dwight Logan have decided to step away from municipal politics.
Tarant says his decision came down to focus.
“I had quite a few divided loyalties in my life. Obviously, with a young family and with a couple businesses to run, it was just getting (to be) too much. I was finding I was stretched too many places, so I had to let something go. I’m still young, I’ve got lots of time to be involved. I just felt at this time in my life, I needed to focus on where I felt I needed to be.”
He adds it was a tough decision to step away.
“Serving with this council has been fantastic. Having veterans like Dwight, Lorne and Helen, (it) has been incredible to learn from the wisdom there. Serving with the others, as well, (it) has been fantastic to learn and glean from them.”
Nineteen people are running for the eight councillor spots in Grande Prairie. Four more are running for mayor. Municipal elections take place across Alberta October 16.
