The JDA County Kings open the 2017-18 regular season tonight in Peace River against the Navigators.
The team has announced their leadership group for this season. Donny Gaudreault, entering his fourth year with the Kings, will captain the team.
“Since day one of training camp this year, he’s come in and he’s been really motivated, excited and really kind of leading by example,” said Kyle Chapple, Head Coach and General Manager of the Kings. “We’ve been really impressed with him and I know that with his experience, and being here for the last few years, he’s the right guy to lead this team.”
Hewko is also entering his fourth year with the club while Kipling was acquired mid-way through the 2015-16 season from the Beaverlodge Blades.
This year’s version of the Kings will include six rookies.
“We’re really excited about those players. At that age, being a first-year player on the team, one of the things that we love about them is their excitement to get started. They bring that high-energy, high-pace type of game being first-year players. It helps push the older players that much more,” Chapple explained.
Meanwhile, in the crease, Chapple has named Will McCreight as their number one goalie.
“He’s one of those guys who can play a lot of games for you. He’s a calm influence on our team, and we’re excited to have him be our starting goaltender.”
Chapple adds the team has improved their foot speed tremendously, and they plan on using that to their advantage.
The Kings return home to the Crosslink County Sportsplex Saturday night for their home opener against the Sexsmith Vipers.
Regular tickets cost $10 while seniors and students can purchase tickets for $7. Puck drop is at 8 p.m.
Elsewhere tonight, the Dawson Creek Junior Canucks host Sexsmith.
