A Salute to Kelly Sutherland will be held October 28 at Clarkson Hall.
The evening will pay tribute to Sutherland’s 50-year career in wagon racing.
Chuckwagon Heritage Foundations President Justin Tidd says Sutherland played a big role in getting his group started.
“(The Foundation was started) to keep the heritage of chuckwagon racing in Grande Prairie and when you think of Grande Prairie and you think of chuckwagons, who do you think of? It’s Kelly Sutherland. When we started the Heritage Foundation, I approached Kelly and Kelly was so supportive. He actually was the guy that came up with the name Heritage Foundation.”
Tidd thinks it will be hard for the sport to replace someone like Sutherland.
“I hate to use the reference again, but (Wayne) Gretzky. You know, when Gretzky retired, I mean, the world kind of held its collective breath and said, ‘What will hockey do?’, then you get a Sidney Crosby come along.”
The salute will include a buffet supper, special guest speakers, and other tributes. Tidd would only say the speakers would include some “well-known Canadians.”
“Maybe some Grande Prairie celebrities, you never know. It’s going to be an interesting evening and I think you’re going to see people you wouldn’t expect to get up and grab a microphone are going to do it.”
Tickets for the salute can be purchased through the Evergreen Park web site. The deadline to buy tickets is October 20.
