Ratepayers in Sexsmith have voted against the use of taxpayers dollars to preserve the last grain elevator in that town.
Florence Blais with the Sexsmith Historical Society says it was 56 percent against, 44 percent for.
“But we are moving forward and the mayor of Sexsmith, prior to the vote has assured me that the vote was non-binding and that it in no way states the future of the elevator.”
She says they have funding applications out and have applied for historical designation.
“We have used, at most, the very minimal amount of funding from the Town of Sexsmith. They’re (the Society) built on preserving it through government grants, donations, as well as working casinos and such and, have been doing that for the past 35 years.”
The goal is to get the exterior done first and then turn the inside into a museum highlighting local farm families.
