We have had questions about the process used for determining the priority in which traffic lights are installed in the City.

Some listeners noticed that traffic lights appeared across from the Canadian Tire store and these residents had been hoping they would see traffic lights earlier at Poplar Drive and 68th Ave. because of traffic volumes and safety concerns.

We are establishing temporary traffic signals on 68 Ave. at Poplar Drive and will install permanent traffic signals in 2010 as part of a capital program to twin 68 Ave. from Resources Road to Poplar Drive.

The reason the lights were installed at Canadian Tire earlier than in the residential area, is because the company paid the complete cost of the installation.

The City uses a traffic impact and warrant system to determine road and intersection improvements.  On existing roads, traffic counts are taken at intersections to determine how well the intersection is functioning and what can be done to improve it if warranted.  Data is currently being collected at intersections across the City.

When a new development is proposed, the City requires the developer to take a look at the impact of their project on the road network and to make any necessary improvements.  In 2005, Canadian Tire proposed an expansion and the City requested a traffic impact analysis be done.  The study recommended traffic signals to mitigate concerns on and adjacent to the site.

Improvements needed on existing roads get incorporated into the City's capital program and completed based on priority and funding.

A map showing 2009 construction projects is posted on the City's website as is the approved City capital program.
