Another initiative of the ATCO Electic Avian Protection Program has been implemented to ensure trumpeter swans stay clear of power lines.

Grande Prairie District Manager Larry Gibson says crews have installed flight diverters on three kilometres of wire around Bear Lake and Secondary Highway 672.

"It is a concern and it does happen quite frequently," he says. "That's why it's important we have a program in place to protect the environment."

The devices are built with reflective materials and are able to rotate, making them durable in windy conditions too.
