The co-owner of a Grande Prairie company that helps people get medical marijuana is welcoming the introduction of federal legislation to legalize pot.
Andrew Boone with Leaf Wise Rx says this should not affect the process used in getting medical cannabis from licensed producers right away.
“However, as you can imagine, as time goes on with this sort of process moving forward, it definitely can impact us with more patients sort of being aware and some sort of coming out of the closets, I guess,” explained Boone.
Boone thinks the bill closely follows the recommendations made late last year by a task force.
He adds he welcomes the strict rules contained in the legislation, for instance, not allowing anyone under 18 to buy weed.
“They seem to be following suit a little bit with the alcohol and tobacco, so there is still a lot to be learned about what the provinces and the municipalities are planning on doing here. It looks like there is definitely some opportunities with some potential store fronts.”
Boone believes the legislation covered all the main points.
“(The federal government’s) main focus has been, and they’re quite clear on this, it’s regarding youth. They want to protect the youth and restrict access to the citizens of Canada and preventing the youth from getting access to this.”
Boone says we still don’t know what effect pot can have on brain development. He also thinks it’s important to look at regulations for driving and for keeping marijuana away from organized crime.
