The Blades are back in Beaverlodge. The league voted in favour of bringing the Junior B hockey club back to the North West Junior Hockey League last weekend.
Richard Lappenbush, who served as team president from 2009-2011, has returned to the position.
“We’re going to take that platform, when I was president back then, and go with that,” Lappenbush said. “The biggest thing was community support, and community players, with bringing in players from outside our catchment area.”
The Blades will be treated like a brand-new team next season and put on a one-year probation period by the league, however, the club will continue to recognize their own past and will celebrate their 20th season in 2017-18.
Lappenbush says they hope to get the entire West County to buy into the team, but a name change is not being considered.
“Player recruitment is going to be a huge thing… and support from the community, we’re really going to hammer that as hard as we can and make sure it’s a community-based team.”
The Blades ceased operations mid-season last year due to a number of issues, and were at times unable to ice a full team.
