An initiative that started two years ago will be unveiled at tonight’s (Thursday) Youth Engagement Awards.
The City of Grande Prairie’s Youth Council has created a documentary called ‘From Redneck to Rainbow: The Rights and Freedoms of LGBTQ and Youth in Alberta.’
Spokesperson Cara Jones says it all came about in 2015 when the Act to Amend the Alberta Bill of Rights to Protect our Children came in.
“So that rolled out the gender guidelines that we saw passed in 2015 and there was a lot of opposition, so the youth was facing a lot of opposition and they wanted to create a documentary that really reflected youth locally and use it as an educational tool so that people could learn about who these impacts are affecting.”
The awards and film will be handed out and viewed at the Grande Prairie Live Theatre starting at 6:30 p.m.
