It was a very successful first trip to the Canadian International Beer Awards in Calgary for the Grain Bin Brewing Company, based out of Grande Prairie.
Their ‘Willie the Wit’ brew, named after local boxing legend, and Olympic silver medallist Willie de Wit, brought home three golds. It won Best in Show, Best in Alberta and the wheat/wit/rye category.
Recently, de Wit was appointed as a Judge in Alberta and Grain Bin Brewer Dalen Landis was just happy that he liked the beer too.
“While we were down there, we dropped off a few cases for him,” Landis said. “They were having an after party, and he wanted to serve some of that beer for his guests. [They were] celebrating becoming a judge.”
It’s helped spread their brand so much, Landis says it’s almost overwhelming.
“We’ve been getting a lot of calls and stuff about trying to get our beer down to Edmonton and Calgary, but our production is actually so low that we currently don’t have the volume to meet demand. We’ll boost sales potentially later on.”
Landis adds the exposure is welcome and he hopes this helps to build the business moving forward.
