The Grande Prairie Drillers open the 2017 Alberta Football League season at home tonight as they welcome the Central Alberta Buccaneers to Legion Field.
The Drillers will be retiring James Kostuk’s number 23 as part of a pre-game ceremony.
“He was the guy who created the Drillers, and has been with the team for 14 years. Does a lot for us and the community and stuff, so I think he deserved it. He’s the first guy we figured that deserves to get his number retired from the Drillers organization,” said Jordon Fersch, President and Head Coach.
Fersch adds a number of alumni will be in attendance to soak in the game and ceremony.
The Buccaneers lost in the Alberta Football League finals last year to Fort McMurray and Kersch says he’s looking forward to playing a really solid team to get things started.
“Playing a team like that, you only can go up… our starters will be in most of the game, most likely. It’s always nice to start-off with a tested team, and that way we can see where we got to work on,” Fersch said.
The jersey retirement ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. with kick-off at 7.
