School will be out for the summer soon, but that does not necessarily mean school zones are.
School zones are legally only in effect during the school year, but Supervisor with Grande Prairie Enforcement Services Ross Gear, says that motorists should still be careful in areas where children frequently play.
“Our smaller citizens sometimes they don’t watch out the way they should perhaps, children are children,” said Gear. “Their minds are playing and they’re elsewhere, so it’s up to us and then the motorist just to be vigilant.”
“When you’re going through an area where there may be lots of kids, just keep and eye out.”
Gear also says motorists should be careful in playground areas, which are in effect year-round from 8:30 a.m. to one hour after sunset.
In these zones, speed fines are the same as normal, based on how much over the speed limit the driver is.
