RCMP in Dawson Creek are cautioning residents about a phone scam that has been reported in that area.
They say someone has been calling people, claiming to be either a police officer or a representative of Canada Revenue Agency.
The caller has been telling people that they owe back taxes, and that the best way to avoid jail time is to purchase Visa gift cards or iTunes cards to pay off what they owe.
Mounties remind you that the CRA do not contact anyone by phone, choosing to use regular or registered mail to contact people.
If you receive this type of a call, you are encouraged to simply hang up without sharing any of your banking info.
