The Elder Advocates of Alberta Society says it is very worried about residents of Berwyn’s Autumn Lodge.
Chair Ruth Adria says residents have been told they must leave the facility by September 30th.
“These are sort of vulnerable people. And they have been told – and there was actually a lot of activity in the community and on-going meetings – saying we are not going to close this lodge.”
Adria adds she has been told by people in the community that one person has already taken their own life, while another has been deemed suicidal by a doctor.
“Some of the friendship go back almost a lifetime. And they know each other. They feel secure. Any move, even for young people or divorce, is very traumatic.”
Adria says her group will be writing a letter to provincial Seniors Minister Lori Sigurdson and to Premier Rachel Notley, saying there is no reason for these people to move.
