The month of November has been proclaimed as Family Violence Prevention month. At around noon on November 1st, County Reeve Leanne Beaupre and Mayor Bill Given made the proclamation at the Eastlink Centre surrounded by community organizations.
Chair for the Prevention of Family Violence Network Natasha Streeter spoke at the event about the groups that help to end this type of violence.
“We are really passionate as a network in regards to sending out a preventative message where we can by having family-friendly events for people to participate in. Also, having educational opportunities like training or workshops that people can attend where they can learn more about how we can all work together to prevent violence in our community.”
There are events being held throughout the month to raise awareness.
On Friday, November 3rd, the Grande Prairie Storm hockey team will be sporting a purple ribbon on their helmets to show support. The network is also starting a social media campaign. On November 15th, people can post a selfie with the #GoPurple attached. At the end of the month, “Take Back the Night” will be held at Muskoseepi Park. The event will include refreshments, a keynote speaker, and sign making. It will go on November 30th at 5 p.m. at the Pavilion.
